The Survival Issue
No. 14, summer 2019
Our Survival Issue hunts for grit and perseverance in the most harrowing of environments, from distant pasts to hauntingly close futures. Its stories face off against the razor-sharp edges of memory, mental illness, and marginalization: a woman receives funding to become a deer; an astronaut remembers the monsters of his past as he faces nuclear extinction. Virtual dinosaurs, secret predators, borderland reunions—these battles are emotional, psychological, and political, confronting beasts both vastly systemic and terribly intimate.
F(r)iction #14 takes a sledge hammer to traditional portal fantasy with two brilliant features: an inside look at the process of our Pioneering Writer Lev Grossman, author of bestseller The Magicians, including an excerpt of his forthcoming novel The Silver Arrow, as well as an interview with fresh talent Alix E. Harrow and an excerpt of her Hugo-shortlisted debut The Ten Thousand Doors of January. From Jaqueline Doyle’s lyrical nonfiction “The Lunatics’ Ball,” to poems on blood and belonging in the devastatingly beautiful Community Feature with Kundiman, this issue wrestles with life at its most complicated—and most breathtaking.
